The Project
The old cemetery lies to the north side of Station Road in Arksey, and has a large number of nineteenth and 20th century graves.
By combining my own survey with that of the Doncaster and District Family History Society it has been possible to photograph and record almost all the memorials.
Since the DDFHS carried out their survey in the 1990's many of the memorials have fallen, weathered, or become obscured by undergrowth. Without their survey it would be impossible to identify these graves today. Their numbered grid map and list of transcriptions has enabled me to locate many graves on the ground and photograph them. There were some memorials the DDFHS hadn't recorded in their survey that I was able to add, plus some errors to amend. This now provides as near a complete list of memorials as possible.
Unfortunately, the cemetery is in a terrible state today, many memorials are fallen, smashed or grown over, so please be aware that it may appear there is more shrubbery on show than grave in some plots.
The graves
are listed A - Z over two pages, and include an image of each one. Missing information
is replaced with a bracketed question mark (?). Information which has been impossible to read, but has been sourced elsewhere is shown in square
brackets [info].
Plot Map
The 'plot map' is based on one produced by the DDFHS, however it has been re-numbered here to account for amendments and additions. There is also a list of plots by number on the pdf ready to print and take along when trying to find a grave in the cemetery itself.

Main Cemetery
Locating a Specific Grave
While my survey of the Old Cemetery is as comprehensive as it can be, there are unreadable and unmarked graves in there. I am often contacted in the hope that I might be able to locate specific graves for people. Sadly this just is not possible if the grave you are looking for has not been included in my survey.
In the case of the main cemetery, where I have only been able to survey a small section, the sheer size of the cemetery and lack of written records in my possession, it is not possible to provide this service.
Anyone wishing to find the whereabouts of certain graves can contact Doncaster's Rose Hill Cemetery and Crematorium. By completing an online form and paying a fee (currently £26), they will be able to give you a plot number and directions for finding it. Follow the link below to complete the form.
