The Manor


Arksey with Bentley belonged to the family of Newmarch. It then passed to that of Tibetot or Tiploft. The last of that line died in 1372, leaving three heiresses. Two of these ladies married Scropes, and that family then became possessed of the manor. Below are various extracts relating to these families.

Exemplification of letters Patent dated March 30, 12 Edw II, being a grant to Bartholomew de Baddelsmere of the advowson of the church of the manor of Bentley, co York, during the minority of the heir of Payn de Tibetot.

(When by the Inquisition Post Mortem it was found that the heir was the King's ward, his rents were received by the King or sold by him to some purchaser. The Inquisition Post Mortem was an enquiry made by order of the King, termed 'diem clausit extremum', as to what a man died possessed or 'seized' of).
(1330 Calendar of Patent Rolls, 4 Edw III, Aug 20 1330 Heckington).

Exemplification of Letters Patent dated 25 Jul, 12 Edw II, being a grant to (B de B as above) of a third of the manor of Benteley in recompese for dower recovered by Alice, the widow, from the estate of Payn de Tybetot, where of he had the custody granted to him 21 Nov, 8 Edw II (about 1315).

Continuation of a grant to Thomas Ughtred dated 12 Feb, 16 Edw II (about 1323) of the custody of the manor of Bentele, co York, during the minority of the heir of Payn Tibetot, tenant in chief, by fine of 20/ York.
(Patent Rolls 5 Edw III, Jan 25 1331, Waltham).

Pardon to Thomas Ughtred, in consideration of his charges to the King's service in Scotland, of £145. 9s 7 1/2d of the £255. 9s 7 1/2d due at the exchequer for arrears of the farm of the manor of Bentele, late of Payn de Tibbetoft, which by an extension of the time of payment, are to be paid by yearly installments of 20 marks; and respite of payment of the balance for seven years.

Grant to Richard Lescrope (Le Scrope), for 230 marks, which he has paid to the King, of the custody, during the minority of the heirs of the manors held by Margaret, late wife of Robert Tibetot, Knight, tenant in chief, deceased, of the inheritance of Margaret, Millicent, and Elizabeth, his daughters, granted to him 8th April, for the same term, upon proof of age, by the last named Margaret, whom Roger, his son married.

Also Knight's fees and advowsons of the above lands granted to Richard Le Scrope.

The manor passed into the hands of the 'Cookes' in ____, for their pedigree, see page 44, and for the 'Cooke Charities', see page 47.
