Continuing the transcription of a note book written by Archie Ernest Trout in 1913 and discovered in Arksey Vicarage. It is copied just as Archie wrote it. Presented in ten parts, this is part nine.

Pedigrees and Family Histories


Newmarch

Burke's Extinct and Dormant Peerage 1831 (K1388) gives the descent of Roger de Newmarch from Bernard de Newmarch (who was a companion of William the Conquerer when he fought against Harold. (? on Battle Abbey Roll).
(Roger had free warren granted him, 11 Edw II, of demesne lands in Yorks. Had a son, Roger. Arms: Gules five lozenges in fease or).

Tibetot

Tibetot appears on the Battle Abbey Roll. Burke's gives the descent of the Yorkshire Tibetot's as Follows.

Henry (was in arms for King Henry III, died age of 34 Henry III).
(Had a grant in conjunction with Thomas Botterel, of the possessions in Yorks & Lincoln of Adam Painel who fought on the other side).

Henry (died 26 Edw I, 1298) = Eve, daur of Pain de Chaworth.
(In 50th year of Henry III made Governor of castle of Porchester, attended Prince Edward to Holy land).

Pain (fell at battle of Strivelin in 1314, was 1st Baron) (aged 19 in 1297) = Agnes, daur of William de Ros of Hamlake. 
(Barony by Writ of Summons 10/3/1308). 

Hawyse = John, son of Robert Fitz Roger.

Eve = Robert, son of Robert de Tatshall.

John 2nd Baron (died 1367) = Margaret, daur of Bartholomew, Lord Baddlesmere.

Robert (died 1372) = Margaret, daur of William Lord Deincourt.

Pain (The Tibetot Earls of Worcester are descended from this one).

Margaret = Roger Lord Scrope.

Milicent = Stephen Le Scrope (brother of Roger).

Elizabeth = Philip Le Despenser.

Page 42

Page 42 begins with another Tibetot family tree which the writer has crossed out - referring the reader to page 42a, as given above. The following explanation and notes are given thus:

The above (family tree, not shown here) does not appear to be quite correct as drawn up by me. Page 174, vol 18, The Reliquary states, Inquisition Post Mortem Robert de Tybetot. Payan son and heir aged 17. This Payan or Pain was the first baron of the elder line. Robert T (Tibetot) (? Robert or Henry, see p42a) his father was son and heir of Henry who died at the age of 34 Henry III (Dieyd Bar ii 38).
(Nativity Roll of Arms Temp Edw I Reliquary vol 15, no 1 on the roll. Dering Roll of Arms Reliquary vol 18 etc).
(Tibetot Rob 94b 8, R C G p556, Reliquary vol 18 age of 26 Edw I, Dering Roll of Arms). 

But vol 15 p230 ibid states - Tybetot, Sir Payn note. aged 19 in 1297, died 1314. Son of and father of a John.

Sir Richard Fitzwilliam (22/9/1478) married Elizabeth (died 12/5/1476?*), daughter and heiress of Thomas, the last of the Clarells, she was buried at Tickhill in 1502?*
(Dodsworth's Church Notes, p12 vol 34, Y.A.S.J note, see also vol 34, Tickhill church, *which (record) is correct?).

Thomas Arksey and John Arksaye mentioned in deed as witnesses (James I 1603 Sep 7 Estrington.
(Y.A.S.J vol 17, p101).

Bell number 1 (see page 8a, Part 3 on this site) was the gift of George Cooke de Wheatley, Baronet, (1st Baronet, born 1628 died unmarried 16 Oct 1683. His brother Henry, born 1633 succeeded him as 2nd Baronet) see also entries in Register chapter.
(The Cooke's of Wheatley).

The Cooke Baronetcy was created 10/5/1661. Arms. or, a chevron gules, between two lions passant guardant sable. Crest, Out of a mucal ___ arg, a demi-lion guardant issuant sable, gorged with ducal coronet, or.

Seats, Wheatley Hall, York and Ranby Hall, Lincs.

The principal names in the pedigree are:-

Note: The dates above, in brackets next to Diana Butler, refer to Sir Henry Cooke, not his first wife. This is how it was written in the original notebook, and could be considered a little misleading.

There are a large number of extracts relating to this family (1693/1868) in Yorks Arch Socy Jour vol 4, p383 etc. Also memoirs of Rev Thomas Broughton (1630/52) in same vol.

The Trout Family

Broughton - The autobiographical memoirs of Rev Thomas Broughton (of Arksey) from about 1630/52 are printed in the YAS jour (vol 4), also a large number of extracts relating to the family (1693/1868).

    As a descendant of sir Henry Cooke and Diane Butler, I found the sentence on this page a little misleading:-
    "Sir Henry Cooke, 2nd Baronet, married Diana Butler (born 1633, buried 16/7/1689), and Ann Stanhope."
    The dates are referring to Sir Henry not to Diana.

    1. Hi Tom, this is from an original transcription of Archie Trout's notes and has not been altered in any way. This is the way he jotted it down in his note book. I agree it does look misleading, but anyone reading my own history of the Cooke family on this site, will find the correct information. However, in view of your concern, I will add a note to clear up any confusion. Thank you for your comment.
