Continuing the transcription of a note book written by Archie Ernest Trout in 1913 and discovered in Arksey Vicarage. It is copied just as Archie wrote it. Presented in ten parts, this is part eight.

Early Inhabitants


The Inquisitions Nonarum, was a return for the purpose of taxing all temoral possessions of persons in aid of the expenses of the King, which tax was granted to Edw III about 1340. The return for Arksey is noted below.

Arksay Tax, LX, Mr. Cuj pochi vz Waltus de Boyleston, Wills le Fogheler, Wills Gamell, Thm fil Willi, Wills Knight, Adam Fogheler, Johs Node, Thm de Tyls*, Johs in ye wroo, Ricus Gamel, Thm Hervy, Rogus Pocok and Robtus Freeman ad hoc ius sup sacrum fin psentant etc, etc.

Extended, the above reads 'Arkesay Taxatio .........cujus parochi......Walterus de Boyleston, Willelmus le Fogheler, Willelmus Gamell, Thomas filius Willelmi, Willelmus Knight, Adam Fogheler, Johannis Node, Thomas de Tyls*, Johannis in ye Wroo, Ricardus Gamel, Thomas Hervy, Rogerius Pocok and Robertus Freeman etc, etc.

Robert, son of Robert de Benteley assaulted etc.

Thomas, Arksey married Mary Wetherall (in pedigree of Stillington).

Arksey was not without its troubles in the Civil Wars, and the following entries relate to persons who fought against the Parliament in the Wars of King Charles I.

John Revell of Arksey, Gent     G190 p427.
Report. His delinquency that he did assist the forces raised against the Parliament, and took upon him to be a chief constable contrary to order of law and by colour of that office forced men into the commission of array and executed several warrants for raising moneys, provisions and arms against the Parliament. He hath lived for two years past at his dwelling house at Almholme under the protection of Parliament as is certified Sep 23 1646. He hath taken the covenant before William Barton and the oath here Oct 1 1646. He is seized of lands in Astone and Norton in co Derby and of other lands in right of his wife in Castleford, of the yearly value of  21li. He is possessed of of the remains of a term for 8 years in Almholme holden from Sir Thomas Ingram, Kt. at the rent of 4li 4/ 1d worth 13li of the remain of a like term in lands in Bentley holden from Sir Thomas Ingram at 13li, 6/ 8d rent worth 20li. He hath personal estate worth 60li is indebted 200li, 30 Oct 1646, Jero Alexander. D Walkius, fined at a sixth 96li. Oct 31 1646.

Certified from W Armitage and William Copley that John Revell hath lived two years last past at his house. G190 p437, Sep 23 1646.

Bryan Cooke the elder of Doncaster, and Bryan Cooke the younger, his son (note of Doncaster JP and Mayor. Died 26 Dec 1653, aged 83, married 24 Oct 1616, Sarah, daughter of Henry Ryley of Doncaster. His eldest son, Brian of Wheatley, barrister at law was buried at Doncaster Jan 1660/61).

Fined at 1/10 2333li.

Reference to a petition for much interesting news, re-church. Money was requested from rectory of Arksey to support Birstall Minster.

Also, money out of Arksey rectory requested from Brian Cooke, delinquent, for Barnsley minister.

Godfrey Copley of Sprotborough, Esq, seized of lands in Bentley, parish of Arksey etc, 23 acres of pasture and 3 of meadow £18.00
(ibid, vol 18).

Thomas de Kent of Doncaster complains that various persons have carried away his goods at Doncaster and Arksey (by K & C).
