Continuing the transcription of a note book written by Archie Ernest Trout in 1913 and discovered in Arksey Vicarage. It is copied just as Archie wrote it. Presented in ten parts, this is part five.

The Church, it's Ministers


1276 - Tedisius de Camilla (Surtees Society vol 109).

c.1288-91 - S'cus Oswaldus (Taxatio Ecclesiastica, (Pope Nicholas) Record Office 1802). Ecclesia de Arkseye (Church of Arksey) £40.

1294 - Peter de Cestria (Patent Rolls Edw I - 22) Canon of the churches of St Chads, Lichfield and St Ethelbert, Hereford, and parson of Arkeseye, Esington and Slayteburn.

1311 - Roger de Wortham (Patent Rolls 5 Edw II)

1314 - Roger de Wortham (Close Rolls 1318-23)

1321 - Richard de la Lee (Close Rolls 1318-23 p354)

1329 - William de Northwell (Patent Rolls 3 Edw III p388, May 16 1329, Eltham). Parson of the church of Arkeseye, going under the aforesaid Bishops (of Lincoln)(going with the King beyond the seas) has letters nominating Henry de Edenstowe and Robert de Kelm his attorneys for the same period, (i.e. a fortnight after midsummer).

1330 - Robert de Hillman (probably Robert de Kelm) (Patent Rolls Jan 4 1330, p 469, Kenilworth). Presented to the church of Akeseye in the diocese of York, in the King's gift by reason of his custody of the lords and heir of Parson Tibetot, tenant in chief.

1330 - John de Sandale (Patent Rolls 4 Edw III P15 vol II, Nov 26 1330, Westminster). Presentation of the parson of the church of Uppingham in the diocese of Lincoln to the church of Arkeseye)*. In the diocese of York in the King's gift (etc, as above) on an exchange of benfices with Robert de Hillman.

(on a separate sheet) Arksey with Bentley belonged to the family of Newmarch, it then passed to the family of Tibetot or Tiploft. The last of that line died in 1372 leaving 3 heiresses, two of these married Scropes and became possessed by the manor. 
Dodsworth the great Yorkshire antiquary visited Arksey on 10/7/1621 and gives a full list of windows, monuments etc, Tiploft, Scrope, Fitzwilliam etc.

Roger d Waltham, 16th April, 1299, at the presentation of the Lady Eva, wife of Sir Robert Tibetof (Tibetot).

Richard de la Lee, 8th June, 1319, by Sir Bartholomew Badlesmere, as guardian, and heir of Payne Tibetoe (Tibetot).

Roger de Stanford, 8th May, 1321.

Payne de Clipsby, 3rd May, 1322, presented by the king as guardian of Payne Tibloft (Tibetot).

William or Walter Northwell, 1st July, 1325, by the King's presentation. He died Rector.

Robert de Hillam, 3rd February, 1329, by King John.

John Killing. He died Rector.

John Kirtling. He died Rector.

John Sandall. He resigned for the church of Knostall.

John Payne, 16th April, 1354, presented by Sir John Tibloft or Tibeto (Tibetot), resigned for the church of Sprotborough.

William Workworth, 28th November, 1361. He resigned for the church of Bubwith.

John Noble, June 1364. He died Rector.

John Chorton, 9th August, 1371, presented by Sir Robert Tibetot.

Adam de Eggleston, 19th February, 1392, by Stephen la Scrope.

John Butler del Clipstone, 15th December, 1419. Presented by the heirs of the Lords of Bentley.

Richard Tregone, 13th June, 1446. Presented by Sir John Fastolf. Knight, who resigned the church of St Martin's, London.

William Kinwold Marsh. He died Rector.

Edward Cresacre. Acolitus.

This ends the Rectors, and I may here mention that during the reign of King Henry VIII., a requisition was made by the King for the forfeiture of the Rectoral tithes of this parish. All that part of the manor marked on the ordnance map, as Broadaxe, and Amersall Field, about 1,200 acres, was charged with the Rector's tithe.

Henry Lee, instituted 22nd June, 1504. 

John Knolles, instituted 26th October 1507. He died Vicar.

William Wilbore, instituted 6th March 1532. He died Vicar.

Robert Usher, instituted 2nd April, 1570, presented by the Queen Elizabeth.

John Halliday, instituted 13th November, 1602, also appointed by Queen Elizabeth.

Isaac Atkinson, instituted 13th November, 1637, presented by Sir Thomas Bland. He died Vicar.

Samuel Burdet, instituted 7th October, 1662, on the presentation of Sir George Cooke, Bart. He died Vicar.

Stephen Hardy, instituted 16th October 1668. He died Vicar.

John Manhood, D.D., instituted 8th April 1674.

John Lee, 17th November, 1702. He died Vicar.

Thomas Rodwell, 2nd august, 1708. He died Vicar in 1748. 

Beaumont Whitehead, 1st October, 1748, on presentation of Sir George Cooke, Bart. He died 1770.

Rev. George Cooke, Vicar of Darfield, was Vicar in 1783, and the services at Arksey were conducted by the Rev. Benjamin Dockray, as curate.  

Rev. John Ramsden, presented by Sir George Cooke. He was also Rector of Crofton, and died Vicar of Arksey 1807.

The end of the Vicars up to this date.

(Here follows a list of churchwardens of Arksey, from signatures in the Arksey Church registers, from 1602 down to 1882. It contains many familiar names, but as it would make quite two full columns of the 'Chronicle' we regret we cannot give it. Ed.)
